New poll: 58% of Massachusetts voters support Legalize Starter Homes ballot question to build more housing statewide

Boston – A new poll by YouGov and commissioned by Abundant Housing Massachusetts (AHMA), a statewide pro-housing organization, found that 58% of voters support a proposed ballot question to allow building single-family homes on smaller lots, known as the Legalize Starter Homes proposal.

YouGov surveyed 800 registered voters statewide in late February 2026 to gauge support for the ballot measure.

Overall, it was the top issue facing the state according to voters, with 45% of voters saying it was the top issue for them, followed by several other cost of living issues. Voters across demographics and throughout regions of the state all ranked housing as a top issue.  The cost and availability of housing as a concern drew more than double the amount of respondents citing it than immigration or taxes.

Voters across demographics and across the state also supported the Legalize Starter Homes ballot question, with an outright majority in most subgroups saying they would vote yes on the question if the election were today.

Across Massachusetts, voters say that housing availability and affordability are serious issues for the state felt among voters regardless of political party, racial background, and other factors.
