Statewide Zoning FAQ
Over the last three legislative sessions, the Massachusetts legislature has passed significant updates to state zoning law. These include the Housing Choice law, which makes it easier to pass pro-housing zoning at the local level, the MBTA-Communities Act, which requires the creation of multi-family zoning districts near public transportation, and most recently the Affordable Homes Act, which legalizes accessory dwelling units by-right in all single-family zoned districts.
With all of these changes taking place, we decided to create a resource page for those interested in how zoning works at the state level. A pdf of the information provided on this page can also be found here. FAQ: MA Zoning Laws
