Vote YES on 7 – Legalize Starter Homes Ballot Question

Bring Starter Homes Back to Massachusetts

More modest homes. More choices. More opportunities to put down roots.

Massachusetts needs more housing choices. This November, we have an opportunity to make it easier to build modest starter homes and help more people find a home that meets their needs.

Vote YES on Question #7 and join Abundant Housing MA in fighting for more affordable homes and more housing choices.

MA housing costs are too high and voters want MORE AFFORDABLE choices:

  • 88% of Massachusetts voters say housing costs are a problem where they live.
  • 67% of voters support allowing single-family homes on slightly smaller properties to help keep costs down.
  • 59% of voters say building more homes people can afford is more important than preventing change in their communities.

Massachusetts simply doesn’t have enough homes to meet the needs of residents. Too few choices mean more competition and higher costs, making it harder for first-time buyers, working families, and seniors to find homes that work for them.

What would Question #7 Do?

Many Massachusetts communities require new homes to sit on large, expensive lots, making modest starter homes harder to build.

Question #7 would allow single-family homes on residential lots of at least 5,000 square feet where public water and sewer are already available. That’s about the size of a basketball court.

Allowing smaller lots makes it easier to build modest attainable homes, giving Massachusetts residents more housing choices at a wider range of prices.

Why vote YES on Question #7?

  • Create more starter homes: Large expensive lots make it harder to build modest homes. Question #7 removes that barrier and creates more opportunities for first-time buyers to get a foot in the door.
  • Give people more housing choices: Not everyone needs a huge house on a large lot. Young families starting out and seniors looking to downsize should have the option to choose a modest home that meets their needs.
  • Help people stay in the communities they love: More housing choices mean more opportunities for the people who make our communities work to find a home and put down roots in Massachusetts.
